Ardour has just seen a new major release, version 4. Since the last release, there have been over 4,000 commits.
Ardour has seen a lot of infrastructure work and now uses a new graphics engine (cairo) for the editor window. You can now also use other audio backends other than JACK, for example you could use ALSA, although JACK is still the recommended backend.
There may be times when you are mixing that you want to, or have to, use external effects or processors. To do this in Ardour, we use inserts. So how do these work and how do we set it all up? Let's find out!
Why use hardware effects?
Using plugins is very convenient so why would you want to use a hardware unit? The two main reasons would be -
Rui Nuno Capela has been on a pre-LAC2015 release frenzy with his Q-stuff suite of software. In the past week he has released updates for QjackCtl, Qsynth, Qsampler, QmidiNet, QmidiCtl and of course Qtractor. You can find full details about these releases over at rncbc.org.
Version 0.9.5 of Giada Loop Machine has been released. This version, codename 'Nabla Symbols', has a number of refinements, as well as permanent MIDI mapping.
Markus Schmidt has posted a new video demonstrating the many plugins of the Calf Studio Gear suite. The Calf developers are currently working towards a new stable release. The version of Calf used in the screencast is 0.0.60pre2+. Check it out!
A brand new plugin, an envelope filter, has been added to the Calf Studio Gear plugins. This is still a work in progress but is hoped to be included in the up and coming 0.0.60 Calf release.
