FluidSynth is a real-time software synthesizer based on the SoundFont 2 specifications. FluidSynth itself does not have a graphical user interface (GUI), however, there are frontends that exist for it, eg: Qsynth EMAP Since version 5.4, Ardour has a built in plugin called 'a-Fluid Synth' which uses FluidSynth as it's backend.Read more

The infamous plugins have been developed over the last couple years and now GUIs have been created for them. A fund raiser in the style of the OpenAV Productions release system has been started to free the source. The LV2 plugins are already open without GUIs and can be tried and used freely.
